Short Track #1

The CU cycling short track series started without any of the bad weather common in the early series. There were threats of rain but the course stayed dry & fast. The opener was contested on a very fast 2 minute lap. Toni Geer raced with the top women in the A field & placed 18th. Drew Geer & Justin Green flew the Chipotle Titus colors in the men's B field placing 10th & 11th.

For fun & training purposes Drew rode with a Powertap; the electronically un-inclined will want to stop reading here. Short track is an interesting event as it ends up being an all out 20 minute tempo session. Drew's average power for the race of 280 watts was above his LT threshold as expected (heart rate all in zone 5). This remained constant throughout the laps. The maximum power output each lap was above 900 watts on the steep power climbs. The average power however, includes the lulls of every downhill & segments of being caught behind other riders. The power profile is very uneven. This ends up meaning that most of the time pedaling is spent at 135 - 150% of threshold in brief bursts, followed by several seconds of DH or turns at 50% threshold.
