An update from Todd Baker on the Voodoo Fire Race in Pueblo...

Hello to all!  I hope everyone's racing season is off to a great start.  For the Sea Otter participants, congratulations on a great performance and impressive showing for Team Kappius.  It is exciting to see the team start strong!

On April 21st, several of us represented Team Kappius at the Voodoo Fire Race in Pueblo.  Scott Pavlakovic, Kelly McGrew and I found the start line of the "Full Marathon" on a near perfect morning.  The air was crisp, wind at a minimum, and the vibe competitively tense, but friendly.  After an age-based interval wave start, it didn't take long for the challenges to introduce themselves.  Early in the race, I saw the first tire casualty on the side of the trail.  It was Scott; but, he was in great spirits and anxious to get back on the trail.  His misfortune relieved me of the weight of two CO2 cartridges, which was helpful, I am sure, as the day grew long and hot.  As most of you know, Kelly McGrew is a tough competitor.  He started the race after a "long week" that would have left most at home on the couch.  He was able to knock out two laps before wisely deciding to fight another day...Even the best have challenges at times.

Scott finished 19th in the 30-39 age group in a time of 6:09:42, with at least one flat among his challenges.  I was able to finish 4th in the 40-49 age group with a time of 5:17:49, and Kelly McGrew, gracefully and wisely, saved himself for another day.

Rocky Mountain Endurance executed a great race and a challenging course, especially for a day that involved some heat!  If you ever race this event, go HARD out of the gate and pass as many as you can early in the race.  Passing only becomes more difficult as you get deeper into the course.

Lastly, I apologize if you are a Team Kappius member that raced Voodoo and I missed you.
