Team Singletrack.com/Justin's Nut Butter ran into the hell that is Cape Epic dropping to 6th overall in the Masters GC. Leading the Frischknecht team by 2 minutes at 42k, we lost nine minutes to them by the end. The day got hotter and hotter and Thomas bonked hard about two thirds into the stage. The rest of the story was sheer survival with Hogan pulling the dying Dooley to the finish.
One highlight was racing along Roberto Heras on the penultimate climb. He had a bigger motor on the final, relatively flat 26k to the finish.
Thomas Dooley crashed toward the finish breaking a brake lever. Luckily he was alright and the SRAM finish crew was able to put everything back together. Except his pride.
Now for Stage 2 tomorrow. Hopefully, we can make up some lost time and move up a bit. But in this heat it will be difficult.
We are sitting in 6th, but still sipping cappuccino in Starting Block A.
