Cross riders were greeted with clear skies and temperatures in the 70s for this weekend's cyclocross races. On Saturday, several Chipotle Titus riders fared extremely at the Xilinx course in Longmont. Several others had issues. That is cyclocross.
To start the day, Gary Thacker and Bob Bieterman started with a huge group of 45+ men. This group is getting unusually large and unruly. Gary Thacker seemed to weather the chaos well finishing 3rd behind Karl Kiester and Russ Kappius. Karl slipped away early with Gary leading the chase behind. Gary ran out of gas late and Russ slipped around Gary pushing him to 3rd. Bob is getting stronger each week and finished 17th.
It was an extremely rough course with three triple barrier sections, the obligatory sand pit, mud and some off camber stuff. The course seemed to favor those that could ride on the edge of control through adverse conditions. Hats off to the the Blue Sky Velo crew for putting on a first class race. The course was great for viewing and there were a ton of people there. Cyclocross is alive and well in Colorado.
In the 35 + race Mike Hogan and Jamie Kiclcoyne donned their Chipotle Titus Super Hero costumes just in time for Halloween. Hogan rode the Titus Exogrid cross machine and did not disappoint. Despite Mike not being able to get in his pedals and relegating both riders to the back at the start, they clawed their way through the field. Hogan ended up 2nd (1st loser) and Kilcoyne was 20th. After the race, Jamie was overheard saying that someone really screwed him up at the start. Ahem, that somebody was Hogan. After several Dale's Pale Ales the two seemed to have made up and are making plans to ride again. Great ride to both.
Finally Karen Hogan rode to a 4th place finish in the Women's Open field. Karen has been riding very strong lately and continues her Burrito Powered success. The women's field was 70 riders strong with Georgia Gould taking 1st. Great job Karen
On Saturday Gary Thacker made up for his 3rd place showing the day before by crushing the field in Ft. Collins. Gary cannot seem to get enough cross and drove up to Ft. Collins with victory in mind. Great job Gary.
